National Council for the Social Studies Annual Conference Panel: I will be a panelist on a panel titled “Taking First Amendment Rights Seriously While Studying Religion” in San Francisco, California, on November 17. The National Council for the Social Studies adopted American Academy of Religion-approved guidelines for the academic study of religion in K-12 social studies that recognize for the first time that religious studies is one of the eight core disciplines to be included in the curriculum. The panel is to equip educators with the tools they need to protect the First Amendment rights of students and teachers when questions arise about religion in the classroom.
